Jewellery

The justifiably popular, atmospherically lit Jewellery galleries (Level 3, rooms 91–93) display everything from ancient Egyptian amulets to contemporary jewellery made from recycled materials. Among the earlier pieces, there are some pretty impressive gold papal rings – giant knuckle-dusters made from rock crystal – and some lovely gilded pomanders used to ward off evil. Specific highlights to look out for, further on, include the emeralds and diamonds given by Napoleon to his adopted daughter in 1806 (cabinet 15), the emeralds and rubies captured from Seringapatam in 1799 and the rare Siberian amethysts given by Tsar Alexander I to the wife of the Third Marquess of Londonderry (all in cabinet 24). Elsewhere, there are Art Nouveau pieces by René Lalique (cabinet 26), Arts and Crafts works by May Morris (cabinet 29) and the ostentatious personal jewellery of the eccentric Edith Sitwell (cabinet 30). Don’t overlook the cabinets in the centre of Room 91 displaying a whole series of semiprecious carved animals that belonged to Queen Alexandra, some Fabergé cigarette cases (all in cabinet 56), and the spectacular Manchester Tiara from 1903 (cabinet 55a).
