Eating
Foodies know Padstow for its high-class restaurants, particularly those associated with star chef Rick Stein; the waiting list for a table at one of his establishments can be months long, though a weekday reservation out of season might mean booking only a day or two ahead. For something a little cheaper, try Steinâs fish and chip shop or his deli, both on South Quay.
Prawn on the Lawn 11 Duke St, PL28 8AB; http://prawnonthelawn.com. Part fishmonger, part rough-and-ready bistro, this place is usually abuzz with cheerful diners. Menus are based on whatâs on display: small plates such as spiced mackerel, marinated scallops and Szechuan prawns are a perennial highlight. Book ahead. ££
The Seafood Restaurant Riverside, PL28 8BY; http://rickstein.com. The core of Rick Steinâs culinary empire, this is one of Britainâs top places for fish, with mains including Singapore chilli crab, hake en papillote, seafood curry. ££
Polzeath and around
Facing west into Padstow Bay, the beaches around POLZEATH are the finest in the vicinity, pelted by rollers that make Hayle Bay, in particular, one of the most popular surfing venues in the West Country. A mile south of Polzeath, Daymer Bay is more favoured by the windsurfing crowd. All the gear can be rented from shops on the beach, where you can get information on tuition, and there are campsites and bars in the vicinity.
Head east and the coastal path brings you through clifftop growths of feathery tamarisk, which flower spectacularly in July and August. From the headland of Pentire Point, views unfold for miles over the offshore islets of The Mouls and Newland, which foster populations of grey seals and puffins.
