The streets around the Vleeshuis and the Veemarkt, a small square in the northwest of the city, home to St-Pauluskerk, were badly damaged by wartime bombing, leaving a string of bare, open spaces edged by some of the city’s worst slums. In the last decade or two, however, the area has largely been rebuilt and revamped, the prostitutes who once congregated here moved north to Verversrui, near the Willemdok, and the crumbling terraces replaced by cosy modern houses, whose pinkish brick facades imitate the style of what went before – urban renewal at its best.
