Chapter 68

Tori O’Shea took her job as Chief of Staff very seriously and made sure that the President’s time was used wisely. She was not inclined to give any of her time to two “flaky” scientists who were working on a project no one had ever heard of. She was firm in her resolve to deny the visit until Palami told her a secret only she and Burke knew. The hologram that appeared from the article found near the spaceships was not a recording, it was a real person from hundreds of millions of years ago who somehow appeared as a hologram.

Tori listened carefully and said, “The day after tomorrow at 9 AM. 20 minutes is all you get. I will be in the room and so will the President’s science adviser. This had damned well better be good from the onset or the meeting could be 5 minutes long. I will make travel and lodging arrangements for you.”

Palami and Burke had worked up what they considered to be a believable presentation that would explain the conditions under which the hologram would furnish information that could totally destroy the incoming asteroid. Furthermore, they would speculate that, if handled properly, we may even learn his civilization’s secrets about unlimited clean energy, vaccines and cures for diseases, climate control, a clean environment, interstellar space travel and beyond. But they had to save the planet first. If that could not be accomplished none of the other potential benefits made any difference.

The two scientists were pacing the floor when Tori called. They were nervous but confident. After Tori told them that they had 20 minutes to make their case to the President they were more nervous than ever because their prepared talk was ninety minutes long. Panic set in. They would have to come up with a whole new plan. “It makes no sense,” Palami stated, “They want us to explain a complex situation with fewer words. That’s like trying to hit three targets with one bullet, isn’t it?” Palami and Burke knew, as did the hologram, that the technology of the day on earth was simply not adequate and that we needed the Saranns help. They also realized the President was a busy woman but “twenty minutes? Twenty Minutes! – No Way.” This story simply could not be told in only 20 minutes.

When the two arrived at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, they immediately got together in Palami’s room and worked all night. At 3 am they ordered pizzas and continued to work. At 7:30 AM they went to their quarters to shower and change clothes for the meeting. “By the way,” Palami almost shouted: “you will wear black socks and shoes! You have shoes, don’t you?”

Sheepishly Burke said, “No, er ah, yes, I borrowed some.”

“Good,” said Palami, “We can’t take the chance of getting turned down because you didn’t wear shoes.”

Burke wore a 14 double E shoe. He thought of the shoes early in the morning before they left for Washington
