Elias hadn’t been this angry in a long time, and he had a sudden urge to chop wood. He didn’t know why, but the rhythmic fall of the axe and the sound of the logs giving way to its force was oddly soothing. Without a woodpile or an axe, though, Elias had to resort to stomping as he walked out to his carriage, and it made him feel like a child. He didn’t even wait for his footman to open the door. He threw it open himself, then slammed it shut as he sat down on the seat forcefully.

“Let’s go!” he yelled out to his driver. “Now!” He wanted to get as far away from this place as possible, and he didn’t care if he’d been abrupt. He wouldn’t be made to feel like a criminal for loving someone too much.

He tried to stay angry on the drive home. It would be so much easier to forget Faye if he could stay angry at her, but by the time they reached the outer limits of Boston, his heart was already softening to her plight. He’d never courted anyone before, but he couldn’t imagine that another woman would make it so difficult for him to marry her. Elias had no idea how he would make it through his voyage to England and back knowing that Faye felt so conflicted about him, but he didn’t see a way that he could remedy the situation.

The one thing he knew that would absolutely make it worse, though, would be to tell his parents. As soon as the carriage reached his home, he put on the happiest face he could muster and forged ahead. He would be leaving in three days, and if he had to, he’d pretend like everything between him and Faye was wonderful. He was sure that after months away from him, she would see reason and realize that they could serve God together, and their love wouldn’t stand in the way of God’s favor.
