CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
Full Metal Malcolmist
The Shire âTuesday, July 23rd, 2019, 9:14am
Halâs plan was meticulously calculated.
Which meant it was already doomed to fail.
âFirst of all, weâll need to kill ourselves!â
âWhat?!â Kara balked, so far from being on board that she was bolting away across the beach of disagreement, losing the flip flops of debate with no desire to return for them.
âNot kill kill, just enough to simulate death. We can be resuscitated after a few minutes. Thatâs like a hundred years for a Restarter,â he said, basing this theory on the fact that they had spent months squaring off against a Dark Restarter after Malcolm had taken his own life at the hospital.
For everyone else, if Hal had understood Harold correctly, theyâd only be gone for a few minutes.
âSo, we pull up in a van outside the prisonâ¦â
âLet me guess,â Ross chided. âWith âFlowers by Ireneâ printed on the side?â
âWe both take a blast from that death juice Malcâ loves shoving into people,â Hal soldiered on, ignoring Rossâs interruption. âThen you guys can revive us.â
Ross realised Hal was shooting finger guns at both him and Ava, whom he was mortified to notice was wearing a ridiculous grin.
There was that anger again. Born from how this younger, mess of a Hal could influence her so easily. In ways he simply never couâ
âAll we need then,â Hal said with a thoughtful stroke of his stubble, none the wiser of Rossâs descent into a darker shade of green, âis a singularity to propel us into an actual restart at the point of death.â
âWell, Ava seems to be a portable restart dispenser,â joked Kara, instantly regretting it after seeing Avaâs happy expression switching to one of recycled shame, and realising four minutes after her admitting to committing an involuntary suicide pact between the three of them was probably too soon to be cracking wise.
âNice. Then, boom! Now weâre restarting!ââ said Hal, with a clap of his hands, imagining himself looking up at the prison walls with Kara by his side, both of them sporting the thousand-yard stares heroes were made of. He was enjoying the interactive daydream. âWe slip into the prison then bust Malcolm out!
âHow would you do any of that if you couldnât interact withâ¦well, anything? Ross scoffed, folding his arms, his scepticism thicker than freshly laid tar.
âOh, I bet you think I haven't thought about that plot-hole, donât you!
âI absolutely think that.â
âRoss, please stop humouring him,â Harold said, clenching his eyes shut in an attempt to stave off the inbound migraine his past-self was generating.
âSorry boss, but I want to hear how he plans on breaking a man out of prison whilst devoid of a retained charge.â
âWell you can do so without me,â Harold chuckled, washing his hands of the conversation and making his way past them all to the Faraday Bridge.
âBrace your bubble for bursting, because I have thought about that,â Hal said with such conviction even Kara sort of wanted to know how that would work. âAnd the answer will blow your mind.
