CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

Full Metal Malcolmist

The Shire –Tuesday, July 23rd, 2019, 9:14am

Hal’s plan was meticulously calculated.

Which meant it was already doomed to fail.

‘First of all, we’ll need to kill ourselves!’

‘What?!’ Kara balked, so far from being on board that she was bolting away across the beach of disagreement, losing the flip flops of debate with no desire to return for them.

‘Not kill kill, just enough to simulate death. We can be resuscitated after a few minutes. That’s like a hundred years for a Restarter,’ he said, basing this theory on the fact that they had spent months squaring off against a Dark Restarter after Malcolm had taken his own life at the hospital.

For everyone else, if Hal had understood Harold correctly, they’d only be gone for a few minutes.

‘So, we pull up in a van outside the prison…’

‘Let me guess,’ Ross chided. ‘With “Flowers by Irene” printed on the side?’

‘We both take a blast from that death juice Malc’ loves shoving into people,’ Hal soldiered on, ignoring Ross’s interruption. ‘Then you guys can revive us.’

Ross realised Hal was shooting finger guns at both him and Ava, whom he was mortified to notice was wearing a ridiculous grin.

There was that anger again. Born from how this younger, mess of a Hal could influence her so easily. In ways he simply never cou–

‘All we need then,’ Hal said with a thoughtful stroke of his stubble, none the wiser of Ross’s descent into a darker shade of green, ‘is a singularity to propel us into an actual restart at the point of death.’

‘Well, Ava seems to be a portable restart dispenser,’ joked Kara, instantly regretting it after seeing Ava’s happy expression switching to one of recycled shame, and realising four minutes after her admitting to committing an involuntary suicide pact between the three of them was probably too soon to be cracking wise.

‘Nice. Then, boom! Now we’re restarting!’’ said Hal, with a clap of his hands, imagining himself looking up at the prison walls with Kara by his side, both of them sporting the thousand-yard stares heroes were made of. He was enjoying the interactive daydream. ‘We slip into the prison then bust Malcolm out!

‘How would you do any of that if you couldn’t interact with…well, anything? Ross scoffed, folding his arms, his scepticism thicker than freshly laid tar.

‘Oh, I bet you think I haven't thought about that plot-hole, don’t you!

‘I absolutely think that.’

‘Ross, please stop humouring him,’ Harold said, clenching his eyes shut in an attempt to stave off the inbound migraine his past-self was generating.

‘Sorry boss, but I want to hear how he plans on breaking a man out of prison whilst devoid of a retained charge.’

‘Well you can do so without me,’ Harold chuckled, washing his hands of the conversation and making his way past them all to the Faraday Bridge.

‘Brace your bubble for bursting, because I have thought about that,’ Hal said with such conviction even Kara sort of wanted to know how that would work. ‘And the answer will blow your mind.
