My clothes were soaked before we’d even left Max’s property. The cows let out painful moos as if they were begging us for help. Maybe to be put out of their misery. The chickens let out anxious bawks telling us good riddance.
“You have a pet cat,” Caleb said glancing back over his shoulder. “I probably should have a pet chicken.”
“We don’t eat pets,” I said scratching the soft fur at the side of Clover’s neck.
Jenna dragged her feet through the mud as if she was tied to the bunker with elastic. Every two minutes, like clockwork, she sighed.
Caleb dropped back and walked with her. He whispered something to her that I couldn’t make out… it didn’t seem to make much of a difference.
Because I’d rested it was a bit easier for me to walk over the slick, muddy ground. I could speak for the others but Jenna hadn’t complained about her blister again.
Every time a negative thought about how it wouldn’t last or how far we had to go popped into my head, I pushed it away. I had to stay focused.
“She’s mad we didn’t stay longer,” Robby said softly.
“I figured as much,” I said. “Did she tell you that?”
Robby’s head bobbed once. “She told us while you were still sleeping. She practically begged us to stay another day.”
“Why didn’t we?” I asked.
Robby flicked me a half-smile. “It would have been nice, trust me, it was hard to make the decision but I was worried about the water. The rain hasn’t let up in the slightest. We walk through more puddles than we don’t. I worry that this is all going to wash out from under us if we don’t get out of here fast enough.”
“That’s a terrifying thought,” I said. “Like a sinkhole?”
“Yeah, maybe,” Robby said. “We really need to find a boat. We’ll travel faster and we’ll be safer.”
Robby looked over his shoulder. There was a good thirty feet between us and Caleb and Jenna.
“Come on,” Robby shouted. “Move your feet.”
I heard Jenna sigh. With how quickly the rain was falling, Jenna needed to pick up her feet. We all did.
“Oh, shit,” Robby said hitting his thigh with his fist.
I didn’t have to ask because I saw what had caught his attention. It would have been impossible to miss it.
There was a river raging between us and the other side of muddy land. Random debris floated rapidly away downstream.
“We have to find a way around,” I said looking in both directions.
“What if there is no way around?” Robby asked. “I think this probably drains into that big lake to the south. And going north will take us too far off course.”
Caleb stepped up beside me. “How wide do you think that is?”
“Forty feet?” Robby guessed. “Maybe fifty?”
“Oh, no, no, no,” Jenna said waving her hands in the air. “Not going to happen. We can’t.”
“What choice do we have?” Robby asked. “Maybe it’s not even that deep. If we hold on to each other.”
Jenna snorted. “It’ll pull us away. Let’s just go back and stay with Max.
