Chapter Twelve

Jenny didn’t come to until she felt her back being pressed up against something hard. The slash in her back caused her to scream out in pain, her eyes shooting open as she looked around her with fear. Cords were wrapped around her torso, binding her to a tree with the other Indian maidens. She was tied so tightly against the tree trunk, her back protested the harsh contact.

“What do you want with us?” Jenny demanded to know. Her vision was blurry, but she could make out a fire burning in a pit in front of her. She could smell the stench of sweat and blood, and she felt cold and wet from the blood that seeped from her back. She shivered, wishing she could lie next to the fire.

“The Indians either pack up and leave this place or we’re going to start killing off their women,” a man said in a dark voice. Jenny looked towards the voice and could make out three men standing together.

“But, Boss. You didn’t say anythin’ about killin’ women,” came a startled voice.

“Shut up, Mason. We have to do this in order to find their gold,” the ringleader said, slapping Mason in the face to get him to be quiet.

“You can’t do this,” Jenny said. “These are innocent women.”

“None of ya is innocent,” the ringleader said as he neared Jenny. “And as soon as we make our demands, you’re the first one I’m killin’.” The man spit on Jenny. She moved her head to avoid his spittle but the movement caused more pain to fill her body. So much so that she passed out once again.

Now wearing moccasins instead of boots Mathew and the Indian braves moved swiftly and quietly through the forest darting their way through the trees even though it was very dark. With Running Stag at the lead, Mathew did his best to keep his eyes on the man so he wouldn’t get lost in the woods by himself.

The sound of a woman screaming stopped them all dead in their tracks. Running Stag pointed towards a direction, and as Mathew looked, he could make out the faint glow of a campfire. They moved together towards the sound and sight of the camp, making sure not to make any noise so as to surprise the men that had kidnapped the women. Mathew’s heart beat hard in his chest as he hoped that Jenny was safe.

As they neared the fire they fanned out to surround the camp. Mathew only noticed three men but realized that one of them had fiery red hair. He wondered if that man could be Geoffrey, the Irish foreman who managed all the miners. Regardless, Mathew was looking forward to taking these men down and making sure the women returned safely to their families. Furthermore, Mathew had made a promise to Mrs. Phillips that he’d keep Jenny safe and he intended to be true to his word.

A gesture from Brown Bear sent the group of Indians and Mathew ambushing the camp.
