After supper, we gathered in the parlor for my birthday. They made me sit in the chair closest to the fireplace as each one presented me with a gift. Preston, Deacon, and Boone went together on a new baseball mitt. James got me a blue neck scarf. I would probably only wear it on Sundays to church. It was a little fancy for my taste, but I appreciated the gift. Violet got me a dime novel.

Mama and Papa asked Ellie Mae to go next. She stood and crossed the room. Then she handed me a paper.

She whispered so only I could hear, “These words are for your eyes only.”

She held my gaze as I took the paper. Then she sat down and watched me with great interest as I unfolded the paper. I read the words silently.

From the moment you first helped me down from a horse, I fell deep into your brilliant blue eyes. You said nothing with words, only with your eyes. I knew you found my appearance pleasing, and it stirred something in me.
