play is intellectual creativity

During freezing cold winters in a suburb of Minneapolis, there’s nothing the boy loves more than an unstructured weekend with his LEGO set. He can cozy up in the basement for hours, perfecting his spacecraft, while the buzz of family life goes on around him.

As a young kid, his favorite play is LEGO. Maybe he has a friend over to build together, but when the friend goes home, the boy is not lonely. He is endlessly fascinated with the iterative process, critiquing his own creation and making it better. He feels grounded and engaged when building with those tiny, colorful, interlocking blocks.

It’s not that the boy doesn’t play sports or engage in school social life. If pressed to admit it, though, his play is divided into “oughts” and “wants.” As an adolescent, he feels that he “ought” to play sports and attend school dances. He does do some of that, and he truly enjoys playing tennis. But the play he loves is the kind that comes with no pressure, just kickin’ it with friends on a Friday night, playing Ping-Pong or Nintendo.
