‘Well, that’s great news,’ I say.

‘It is, isn’t it?’ replies JC. ‘Anyway, you start Wednesday. We’ll give you a day’s gardening leave tomorrow so you can go and get a new outfit.’ Right, well, that’s a new source of pressure. And a day’s probably about right. Like I can afford a garden on what these guys pay. I’d be pushed to afford a bloody window box.

‘Be here at nine on the dot,’ I say.

‘Creatives don’t start till ten. But hey – you can get an hour of accounts in before you start. Should keep you happy. ‘ Why does he think I’m trying to get this job, if accountancy is something I do for fun?

But this is good. I’ve got a trial period. In six weeks I’m going to find out whether I’m an advertising creative or not. In a more demeaning way than I imagined humanly possible, but hey…
