The Bridge

Adam and Evelyn were heading Northeast on Route 70. They encountered many people stranded on the highway walking towards the nearest towns. Mostly, people stayed to themselves. Fear of strangers and the virus provided lots of social distancing. Although their journey hadn’t been without conflict - as they walked on Durham-Pentz Highway, a few drunk individuals were harassing people.. Adam figured that these individuals decided to tailgate right in the middle of the highway. He thought to himself, I guess if you are in the middle of a pandemic, and then thrown back into the Dark Ages to boot, you might as well party. Evelyn wasn’t having any part of their shenanigans. As soon as one of the drunk young men approached her, she grabbed her gun, pointed it at his head, and simply said, “Give me a reason.” The man raised his hands in surrender as he walked backward towards his friends as they hooted and hollered. Adam just shook his head. Since then, the walking herd thinned out as soon as they approached Butte College. They still had a small group about a quarter of a mile ahead of them and a few stragglers behind them.

The sky turned a beautiful shade of reddish-orange, as the sun set behind them. Streaks of purple accented the desert sky, creating a work of art hovering above. Adam couldn’t avert his eyes from the cornucopia of color until he walked into the back of Evelyn, who was standing still.

“Watch it.” Evelyn hissed.

“Sorry, I was daydreaming. Why’d ya stop?”

“Look.” She pointed towards the bridge up ahead. According to the sign, it was the West Branch Feather River Bridge. Adam squinted and saw a group of people stationary at the beginning of the bridge.

“Why have they stopped?”

“There is a group of people with guns blocking their way. It looks like they are asking for a toll.”

“Jesus. Seems those people were turned away.” He pointed towards a family of five – a mother, a father, and three girls all in their teens—walking back towards Adam and Evelyn. “What do you want to do?”

“ I don’t know. We shouldn’t get any closer unless we have a plan. Let’s ask the family what is going on, and then we can decide.”

“What if we go around?”

“I have no idea how to get around or how long it would take.”

“We could ask the family if they know of another way around.”

They waited another few minutes before the family got close enough.

“Hey! Can we ask you a question?”

The Father grabbed his kids one by one and made them walk on the other side of him, and then he grabbed his wife and Evelyn heard him say, “Just walk.”

“We mean no harm. We just want to know what’s going on. My name is Evelyn and this is Adam, we need to get across the bridge. We have some water if you need some.” This made the father stop. Evelyn could see that they had no supplies on them. She heard him say, “Stay here.
