Swapping trophies, Prunella Scales with a Colin Grazier commemorative plate and the author with the Celebrities Guild of Great Britain award he accepted on behalf of Grazier, Fasson and Brown.

Film star William Franklyn, Michael Brandon, of Dempsey and Makepeace fame, and actress Anita Harris applaud as Prunella Scales presents an award from the Celebrities Guild of Great Britain to Phil Shanahan on behalf of Colin Grazier, Tony Fasson and Tommy Brown.

I’ll also never forget coming down from the stage after the presentations had been made. Neil Morrissey raised my arms into the air as if he was a fellow striker spontaneously celebrating a goal. The story of the men must have really grabbed his imagination. He was a lovely man, in one sense not too dissimilar to the character he played in Men Behaving Badly. He was the only male in the room not to be sporting a bow tie and he was out to enjoy himself. And good for him. At one point he danced exuberantly next to us, armed with a beer glass in one hand and a cigarette in the other. I half expected Martin Clunes to arrive on the dance floor on the other side of us with his arms whirring like windmills.

We discovered later in the evening that Neil spent his formative years in Stoke-on-Trent, my home city. Claire had also lived in the Potteries for a time, although we first met in Portsmouth where our respective newspapers had sent us on a journalists’ training scheme. We talked quite a lot about our memories of the Potteries and I later gave him one of the Grazier plates I had taken with me. I handed out several that night including one to Prunella Scales. They seemed to have really taken the story to their hearts. Later on it was good to see Neil passing his Grazier plate round his table for everyone to admire.

At the end of the evening, despite its only being November, we all linked arms on the dance floor and belted out Auld Lang Syne. What a night!
