Missions

Chapter 32

I couldn't bear to be apart from Colin, so we take our shower together in an empty hospital room. Between the two of us, it takes half an hour and a lot of warm water before the drain runs clear. Neither one of us can get enough of each other. Colin's hands explore my body, softly washing my skin.

He halts on my back and turns me around with a frown on his face. “What happened?”

My hands go to my lower back, feeling the round, slightly raised scar. “That's how they got me. They shot me in the back and took me to their spaceship.”

“You were shot in the back?” Utter horror mirrors in his eyes.

His hands move over the scar, his face concerned, worried, and full of empathy. I nod, and tears gather at the memory of the pain and the inability to move my legs. “They fixed me somehow. They shot me here too. And here.” I point to the two scars on my shoulder and the three on my belly.

He kisses each one. “I'm so sorry I wasn't there to help you.”

I take his face in my hands and kiss him. “It's not your fault. There was nothing you could have done. But I thought you were dead. That was the worst part.”

He laughs, and the arrogant smile I love so much plays around his lips. “It takes more than a little chopper crash to kill me.”

But he can't fool me; I see the pain in his eyes. The crash didn't leave him unscathed. “What happened?” I ask in a low voice.

The water still sprays over us and feels so, so good. “We took a hit. But the pilot was able to get us low over the water, so I could get the kids to jump, along with the other crew members.” His face darkens at the memories. “The pilot told me to jump too; he was going to try to land the chopper on the island, but…”

He leaves the sentence hanging. We both know what happened; the Black Hawk didn't land.

“I was going to wait, see if I could help him, but he banked, and I lost my balance… I fell out more than I jumped.” He rubs his shoulder unconsciously.

“You got hurt?” I state more than ask.

“Dislocated the shoulder. Blake got it back in.”

The pictures forming in my mind are vivid. Colin swimming to safety, in agony. That he didn't drown is a testament to what kind of man he is. I imagine Blake rushing to the shore, helping his brother out of the water and on land. Assessing him and realigning his shoulder, something that is one the most painful things in the world.

I snuggle closer to Colin, enjoying the feel of our naked bodies pressed to one another while the spray of the water keeps us warm.

“Then what?” I prod carefully.

“You were gone.” he laughs bitterly. “We couldn't find you; it was like you vanished into thin air. Which I guess you did.
