CHAPTER 26

Seth stood in the white confines of the med bay, wondering if he’d ever felt quite this tired before. In front of him, Liane lay on a gurney, fast asleep, and hooked up with electrodes to the machines monitoring her vitals. Medics paced on either side, making certain that her sedation held steady. It made him feel slightly sick just looking at it all, guilt flooding him as he thought back to what had happened in the containment cells.

I should have stopped them, he silently raged. I knew it would upset her, and I still let it happen. Now, look where we are.

“Fascinating,” Dr. Easton commented from across the gurney, flitting about from the monitors to Liane and back again. He would stop only to ask questions of the medics working on her and kept shaking his head at their answers. “Simply fascinating.”

“What is?” Seth called out.

“How she can function with this level of advancement, the speed of cell regeneration,” Easton answered, reaching out to tilt Liane’s head to the side in consideration. “There are so many tests I wish to do; if only I had my old lab, the equipment there is so much more advanced. Broken shoulder already healing with minimal regeneration, muscle damage already repaired in a matter of hours. But how did they engineer the lack of pain reflexes, I wonder . . .”

He picked up her arm, and before Seth had time to react, he flicked a scalpel across the skin. Blood welled up from the wound, but Liane didn’t so much as stir. It coagulated almost instantly, and Easton said in the same enthralled voice, “Just fascinating.”

Seth rounded the gurney in an instant, his hand slamming down on the doctor’s shoulder and pulling him away as he said in warning, “Get. Your hands. Off her.”

Easton went pale. “Of course . . . I meant no harm . . .”

“I want to hear about the cure,” Seth said, releasing him. “How close are you?”

“To a cure for the airborne serum, very,” answered Easton. “For the Strain, however, it’s going to take more time. Besides, the Council has made it very clear that I'm supposed to focus my efforts on engineering more of the Strain, not on curing it.”

Seth stepped back in shock. “But what about Liane?”

“Well, we found several dozen vials of the Strain in her Handler’s bag,” Easton said hopefully. “Enough to prevent her suffering from the Contingency. She’ll be fine for the foreseeable future until I can turn my attention to a cure.”

“She’ll be in containment for the foreseeable future,” Seth snapped.

“Yes, but safe,” said Easton, his tone not leaving much room for argument. “Would you let her out after seeing what she did to the steel of that cell?”

“No,” Seth admitted. “And neither would the Council. So I need you to keep working on a cure.”

“I’ll do what I can,” Easton nodded, adding, “Truly, I will. But a cure will mean nothing if she’s still one of them.”

Seth looked back at Liane’s sleeping face, for once unable to think of anything to say.
