Simon's group continued on for several more days until the forest abruptly gave way to a beautiful patch of sunrise colored wild flowers that stretched away both to the right and the left as far as the eye could see. On the edge of the patch, directly ahead of them, was a single, solitary tree. Its branches spread out before them like a gigantic umbrella which made it appear as though it were welcoming the hikers to its domain with open arms.

"Take a look at that!" exclaimed Aria.

"Okay, that's just cool," said Trevor in amazement.

Alex gestured proudly to the field, and said, "Lady and gents, I'd like to welcome you to the third hextant."

"We're there already!?" said Aria in surprise.

"We are indeed."

"So what's next? Do we have more hazards to deal with?" asked Trevor.

"Not exactly. There will be plenty more ahead. However, this hextant is about endurance. So you'll find yourself hiking over many hills and valleys along the way, as the path through here is in no way smooth. As such you will quite often be forced to push yourself beyond your limits."

"How large is this next section?" asked Simon.

"About twenty five hundred miles. It is one of the longest on the course. The next one is even longer. The last two, though, are thankfully short, albeit very difficult," said Alex.

"Will we be able to keep the same pace in this section that we have so far?"

"Not likely. Even so, if we keep going and don't stop for any great length of time, we should make the wintering grounds with time to spare. And if not, then we should still arrive before the first snow falls. If we come up too short, we can just build a cabin of our own to winter in. The only issues with that will be gathering enough food to carry us through until spring."

"Do the controllers supply hikers with food in the cabins?" asked Simon.

"Aye, they do. And nearly any other resource you may need for the winter. That's why they're preferred by most racers for wintering over."

"In that case we'll want to ensure that we reach the cabins before winter at all costs, as I don't want to risk starving to death if it becomes difficult to find food once the snow flies."

"You have our skills in hunting you may call upon," said Birash.

Simon pursed his lips slightly.

"As useful as that is, I'd rather not place the entire burden of our survival on your shoulders because we were late reaching our destination. No offense, of course."

Birash smiled.

"None taken, my friend."

The group then continued forward into the field of wild flowers, stirring up large swarms of little black bugs that were hiding among the flowers as they did. This in turn brought out large flocks of brilliant yellow and green colored birds that flitted in and out of the flowers like little sparrows in pursuit of the bugs. Aria laughed and giggled at this as the little birds would dive into the grass or flowers all around her, and then appear moments later with their mouths full of bugs.
