“I CAN SEE the ocean,” Remi called to AJ as they galloped down the broken road. The bot fidgeted in agreement behind her, keeping his arms locked around her waist and his feet tight against Skylla’s sides.

Remi was exhausted, but for now her excitement was keeping it in check. She opened her eyes as wide as she could and took a deep breath, trying to stifle a yawn.

They had ridden through the night, chasing the dawn that spread like a fire over the sea. Their route had shown them the darkness that had overtaken AJ’s world: crumbling cities, piles of ash, twisted metal and smoldering embers, plumes of smoke that bloomed from the carnage. They had done their best to avoid the most dangerous parts. Still, they’d heard the howls and the wails of the Leaks and knew they were never far from danger.

But now, at long last, they had come to their destination. A long runway stretched out before them, stopping just short of the water. A large metal building with an arched roof stood at its near end .

Skylla came to a stop near the building. Remi climbed off the horse, then helped AJ down. Achilles, who had kept stride with the horse the entire way, curled up on the ground‌—‌perhaps to rest, perhaps just to enjoy the morning light.

“This building,” AJ said. “It’s at the coordinates Blee gave us.”

Remi turned back to the horse. She knew Skylla was a machine, and maybe machines didn’t truly get tired, but her heart swelled with gratitude nevertheless. The mare had carried them for what felt like hundreds of miles. Now, they would have to say goodbye.

“Where will you go now?” Remi asked.

Skylla leaned down and nickered, then pushed her glinting muzzle into AJ’s shoulder.

He jumped back, laughing. “Okay, okay‌—‌but make sure you take it easy on me this time.” He placed his hand against the horse, and his head pulsed. His eyes grew distant as they had before, and Remi knew the mare was speaking to him. At first, she worried, but his broad smile quickly dispelled her fears.

“She says to tell us‌—‌” He paused. “She says to tell us that she will always remember us. That she’ll miss us. You too, Achilles.”

The canine wagged his tail.

His hand still on the horse, AJ listened quietly, then nodded. “I understand,” he said, lowering his arm. “Skylla says she’ll return to her herd. She says goodbye, and wishes us all good luck.”

Remi looked up at the great creature. She was even more stunning with the sun reflecting off her midnight body and the ocean rising behind her. Remi rested her head on the mare’s neck and wrapped her arms around her. “We’ll miss you too,” she whispered. “Thank you for everything.”

When Remi let go, the mare whinnied, reared, and galloped away, bits of pavement flying into the air behind her. Even though they had only known each other a short while, Remi was sad to see her go.

She took a deep breath and turned to face AJ and Achilles.
