Day Four - Clio

As the announcement ended, Clio held her wrist brace out in front of her and snapped a hologram. Grinning, she examined the glyph above her head. She wondered if she could ask Anansi to make her crown larger. Maybe add some rubies? But then she remembered she was mad at him right now. She sneered, looking at the rest of the room. They were all shouting at each other in the wake of Giovannetti’s announcement. So typical. They had the balls to be clandestine villains, rulers of a new world, but they didn’t have the courage of their convictions to go public. A bunch of power-mad, craven losers and she was stuck with them.

Only one person in this room worried her, and that was Minju Chen. She had never met her directly. In fact, until Anansi had told her that Minju was the brains behind everything, Clio wouldn’t have believed it. Anyone that had kept herself so well concealed was obviously good at what she did. Now was the time to see how she responded. Like Clio, she was silent and still.

Clio picked at the grapes and watched the various groups cluck and panic. There were lots of calls being made. Clio smirked as she noticed how many were voice only. Calling the wife and kids, checking in on mum and dad. Everyone out there writing sneaky little lists, all dobbing on one another. Giovanetti was going to go through the population like rotting meat. Her success depended on how long the glyphs lasted. How long could someone with a crown remain unseen?

She snorted as she watched the pharaoh swat above his head, then put his ceremonial headpiece on. His face was a picture when the glyph simply rose to the top of the hat, still visible. A group of sycophants circled him, all trying to erase the crown and shaking their heads.

‘Hello, Clio.’

Clio turned and looked the curator up and down. Tall, blond, well-muscled, this was the one that had been brought on board to keep tabs on the mud fly.

‘Sod off.’

Stefan recoiled then tried again. ‘Come on now, we curators need to stick together through this. If anyone gives you any hassle just let me know and I’ll take care of them for you.’

Now Clio gave him her full attention. It was nice to be surprised.

‘Do you actually think I need help from you, little boy?’ She smiled, but it didn’t make it to her eyes. It barely made it to her lips and, the way her teeth were exposed, made Stefan shudder.

‘Don’t make me ask a third time, because you really, really wouldn’t like that. Sod off.’

Clio watched as Stefan took a deep breath and thought better of it. Nonchalantly, he helped himself to some grapes, as though that were the only reason he had come over and walked back to find a better bet to hitch his wagon to.

Just when Clio despaired of this lot getting their act together, the pharaoh stood up and banged his hand on the table until everyone stopped talking.
