#19 – Julius

‘Why is Nymens being such a git?’

Neith and I were walking along the corridors towards Sam’s office and if I’m honest I had a spring in my step. The fact that there was something rotten in the state of Denmark had reassured me, and for the first time since I arrived, I’d slept like a baby. After yesterday’s meeting with Sam, everything seemed easier to cope with. I wasn’t going mad, there was a problem, and I wasn’t the only one that had noticed it.

Neith looked like she had gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson and lost nine of them. Now she stopped walking and looked at me quizzically, tipping her head to one side. She paused whilst I waited for her to cotton on and then continued walking, this time just a tad more formally. It was clear the idea that someone could eavesdrop on our conversation was a hard one for her to grasp.

‘Must I remind you to use the proper form of address again? It’s Captain Nymens to you, Neophyte Strathclyde. And I would remind you that observing the correct procedures when it comes to paperwork and the filing of documents is not to be dismissed so lightly. As you yourself should understand.’

‘I know, but why blame you? It was my fault. Dragging you in for this training session seems a waste of your time.’

‘Not at all. I am your mentor so if you make a mistake the fault is mine. A remedial session is in both our interests.’

We continued along the corridors playing the parts of sulky student and fed-up teacher until we reached Captain Nymens’ door and Neith knocked sharply, then entered. From the corridor, you can only see his desk. It’s not until you enter the office that you can see the sofas at the far end of the room. Which was just as well because Rami and a lady were already sitting there. Given that Rami was still officially on sand leave, his presence might draw speculation. I didn’t know who the woman was, but Neith apparently did as her formal demeanour suddenly became ramrod. Previously, she had been acting for the benefit of any snoopers. Now, she was in earnest.

‘Forgive me, Captain Nymens, we have arrived at an inauspicious time, my profound apologies. We shall return at a better time.’

Sam closed the door and the woman stood up and approached Neith.

‘Quantum Curator Salah, what a delight it is to finally meet you in person.’ She stuck her hand out and Neith appeared to be in a daze as she automatically shook the woman’s hand. This was one of the few times I had seen Neith flummoxed, so I looked at the source of her confusion with greater interest.

The woman was wearing the standard pale yellow jumpsuit of a custodian. Her hair was cut short, she wore no make-up or jewellery, and if I saw her again in a crowd, I might not remember her. She had no stars on her
