#18 – Neith

Julius was already in the briefing room when I arrived, and I headed over to join him. The room was busy, but I wasn’t late, and people kept waylaying me.

‘Heard your neo got the book in the middle of a Blitz raid. Bene!’

‘Cool tactic to throw him in at the deep end. Make sure he really deserves to be here.’

Everyone was keen to compliment me and welcome me back into the fold, but it all felt hollow. It was an unfortunate step malfunction that had almost ended in disaster. The credit wasn’t mine; I wasn’t testing Julius’ limits. We got lucky and we got the book as well.

‘Looks like you and Blue are going to be a great team. Congrats,’ said Piers.

‘Just doing my job.’

By the third time I said it, it was getting quite jokey. If I was coming back into the fold, I had better do it 100%. I sat down beside Julius and we gave each other a polite nod. I wasn’t impressed to find that he had been hanging out with Ramin and from his overly polite nod, I guessed he knew I was annoyed and in turn was mad at me. Oh well, he’d soon learn I was right.

‘It seems rowdier than usual today?’ said Julius in a flat voice.

I looked around at my fellow curators, smiling at a few who were high-fiving each other, some sitting on desks, others peeling back bandages to compare scabs. These were my people.

‘Just us old-timers and you neophytes now, but we’re all quantum curators. Previously your lessons were shared with engineers, medics, curators and custodians, now it’s just your tribe. The volume is bound to go up.’

Julius looked around and laughed, but I wasn’t sure what was going through his mind. He was impossible to read. He was just the same as a little boy. See now. Where did that thought come from? Ugh. I would have to have a proper chat with him soon about splices and see what the hell I was picking up on.

Sam walked in and the room settled down. He ran through the normal welcome to the neophyte pairs and thanks to the seasoned QCs who had volunteered to do this essential mentoring job. He then ran through each mission, praising and criticising as he went. Mostly everyone had had an uneventful mission, although two neophytes had got into a fight with a monk and got their butts kicked. Naturally, we all found this hilarious. Another curator had got knocked down by a car. His neo pair had simply walked out into the road and he had had to push them out of the way. All members of the team were looking bashful, obviously the pair were embarrassed, but their mentor was mortified that he hadn’t anticipated their stupidity.

‘And then we have Salah/Strathclyde, who went the full bull run. QC Salah, why don’t you tell the boys and girls how your step went?’

I stood up and cleared my throat. Everyone was looking at me expectantly, many with friendly grins, or awed expressions depending on their rank.
