CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

HAM SAT AT HIS WORKSTATION WITH A PACKET OF enhancement drugs in his hand. There was only one packet left – for emergencies only, he had told himself. So how had it come to this? Just when Alissa needed him the most he had barely any supply left. The attempts he had made at recreating the drug were miserable failures and had been one of the main drains on the resource he had left.

As he lifted the packet to his nostril, he closed his eyes and prepared for the burn.

It never got easier, no matter how much he used. It still felt like something was melting his nose and throat. As he threw the packet across the room to the bin a few drops of blood splattered onto the floor. He pressed a tissue to his nose until it stopped.

Within seconds his brain was working overtime, already thinking about the technology he had experienced back on Earth and how it could be utilised to create something so small. He opened the locked, steel box containing the small device. Leaning over it, he switched on a light and got to work. It was tiny, but it looked to be receiving data from something. Frowning, he pulled a monitor closer and worked on connecting the two.

Let’s see what’s going on in there.

Alissa felt numb. Like things had just stopped being real. It had been a week since the tracker had been removed and there hadn’t been a single dream about Silver Glove. Far from the relief she expected, Alissa missed him. The visits had become a comfort to her, an escape from the life she was expected to live on this ship. Now all she could do was think about how different her life had become, with Shem not speaking to her and Ham taking enhancers again. She felt like she was alone. Even Megan had met some other mothers on board and was becoming good friends with them, leaving Alissa with nothing but her work to focus on.

So, she threw herself into her job, and the security team were not happy about it. Alissa worked them hard with drills and workouts. She became obsessed with ship safety, following her crew on their patrols and burying herself in training modules on the subject. It took one of the more experienced crewmen, Alistair Morgan, to talk her out of it. Alistair was the oldest man in the crew, with distinguished grey temples and green eyes that wrinkled sweetly when he smiled. He had worked security on ships for the last thirty-seven years and while his respect for superiors was unquestioned, his patience had started to wear thin.

Comms pads were strewn about her desk when Alistair arrived. He frowned as he walked in and she looked at him over her cup of coffee.

‘Morgan. What can I do for you?’ Even her voice sounded tired. Probably from shouting drills.

‘I wanted to talk to you about your new approach to the team.’ He perched himself on the corner of her desk.
