Chapter 15

Aquila

After stowing their clothes in their hotel rooms, as it was still early local time, they used the same vehicle to travel to the Imperial Security office. The planet's Imperial Security headquarters was a small, unpretentious two-story building tucked behind several other government buildings on a backstreet, largely out of the public's view. The car parked itself in a car park that catered for a sizeable number of vehicles for the relatively small building, and they made their way inside, where their identities were checked thoroughly.

Once inside the building, Captain Dardain and Lieutenant Levin quickly escorted him to the office of Major Grenwald, head of Imperial Security on Aquila. As the other two had already been on the planet for some time before coming back to Kimeria to collect Mirac, his introduction didn't take long, and they soon headed to their office, which was situated on the upper floor. They had been assigned a two-office combination of a larger outer office and a smaller inner office. Mirac's computer set up was on a desk on the right-hand side of the inner office. He would be sharing the office with the Lieutenant, whose computers were situated on the opposite side of the room. They booted up their computers, and Mirac spent some time familiarising himself with both the hardware and available software. Both seem more than adequate for the job at hand.

"Here's the drill," the Captain said, leaning on the doorpost. "Your machine doesn't have access to any of the government computers that Imperial Security would normally have. As we said on the trip out here, we want you to attack this virtually blind without any preconceived notions. Somehow, they were able to access the computer systems on this planet, insert people with full education histories, and various other pieces of inserted information that confirm their existence, and they did it without leaving any traces, well none we have been able to detect so far."

The Lieutenant now added his two cents worth.

"What we want from you as a first task is to work out how to duplicate what they've done. If it can only be done through someone on the inside, that is important information. If there is a way of doing it by cracking into the system through faulty security or backdoors that people haven't noticed, that is important information as well. If you find it impossible to replicate what they have done, then we'll have to look at alternatives."

"So, besides the foreign spies having a full education history, what other pieces of information entered into the system confirm their existence?" Mirac asked.

"The one we know about had a limited driver's license for use by underage farmhands and mineworkers. They're pretty common in the backblocks here, as it is often hard to find adult employees out there. Teenage family members have no trouble applying for these limited licenses that allow them to drive specific agricultural and mining equipment. The person we are aware of had a mother and a father listed with birthdates and an address, which turned out to be bogus.
