Chris pointedly ignored the duke’s glares.

Part of him hoped they’d not have to be brothers-in-law. The man was excessively ornery. He cut a piece of his roast and tried not to glare to his left. It wasn’t entirely Blake’s fault and even Chris could confess that part of him understood.

The duke had requested that he propose to Delilah, but Chris had been resisting. There were his own reasons, of course. He wanted a countess and he had to be certain he chose well. But mostly, he held out for Lila’s sake. If she didn’t wish for the role, he’d not force it upon her, no matter what the duke demanded.

He knew that Blake would never go public with the story of them alone in the cottage. He’d not ruin her that way.

He sat straighter, his fork and knife gripped in each fist.

He must look like a man preparing for battle, but Blake was formidable. There was no doubting that.

Lila have him a long stare as she slowly cut a piece of her own meat. “Do you think we’d have time to tour the grounds tomorrow?”

“Of course,” he answered, glad for an opportunity for them to speak privately. His fingers itched to touch her, run a hand along her silky skin. “I’ll take you out in my phaeton.”

But Blake only glowered deeper. “We’ll all go.”

Wonderful, just what he needed. A surly duke watching their every interaction. But as a host, he could hardly say no. “How wonderful. We can surely find a second carriage for you and the duchess.”

But Lila waved an airy hand. “Why don’t you and Chris go earlier? Then you can ride on horseback as hard as you wish as you tour the grounds. I know how much you’d prefer that. And my sister and I can have some time together.”

She gave her brother-in-law a winning smile and then she looked at Chris, giving the smallest wink.

Blake grunted his agreement and Chris had to confess, any woman who could sway a duke that grumpy had social skill. This was what a countess did. She helped create alliances that benefitted her husband.

They finished dinner and the ladies rose, leaving the dining room to retire to the music room while the men stayed behind.

It was the part of the evening to which Chris had least been looking forward. The duke kicked back in his chair, as he stared at Chris. “We need to talk.”

“Fine,” he answered carefully masking his features.

Blake cleared his throat. “According to Daffodil, I am to thank you for the excellent care you took of her sister.”

Chris started in surprise. This was not the conversation he’d expected to have. “I see.”

“And also, I’ve been made aware that you were a gentleman during your time with Lila in the cottage. Albeit, a very familiar one.”

“Thank you,” he ignored the second sentence.

“But,” Blake’s face turned to stone once again. “I still insist you marry Lila.”

Chris cleared his throat. “Give me the chance to speak with her first, would you?”

“On the ride tomorrow?” Blake asked, as he gave Chris a long stare.
