The mother of a young man accused of treason came before Napoleon, just before her son was to be hanged for his crimes. “I implore you, Great Emperor,” she said, “that you would have mercy on my son.”

“Mercy?” Napoleon responded in disbelief. “Do you have any idea how great these crimes are that your son has committed against our country? He doesn’t deserve mercy!”

With innocent hope, she responded, “Sir, you are right. If he deserved it, it wouldn’t be mercy.” At that, the emperor freed the man.

So it is in our lives. It’s when we realize we don’t deserve it, that we become candidates for mercy and guilt-free living.

As we’ve seen, all our lives, we fight against guilt, or yield to it, by justifying our wrongs and defending ourselves. But when we make ourselves vulnerable by letting down our guards and standing naked before Heaven, God clothes us with mercy and righteousness. That’s when His forgiveness becomes real in our lives.

And, folks, if GOD can forgive us—then we must certainly forgive ourselves.
