Chapter Eleven
Jake!
Please let the connection work. If he killed her, he’d never forgive himself. And she wouldn’t be too happy, either. The cloud over his eyes didn’t lift.
Jake, you’re dreaming, she thought, as calmly as she could, deliberately using his name again.
His hand tightened around her throat.
Oh, damn. This wasn’t good. Jake, please, you haw to wake up now. I’m in trouble here and need your help.
His hold loosened a bit. Confusion entered his eyes, and she hoped that indicated he was starting to break out of his fog. She continued using the words she was sure would reach him. It’s Cai, Jake. You have to help me; there’s no one else who can.
Cai? he asked, disoriented.
Yes, Cai. Help me out here and snap out of it.
He went rigid, and she knew her Jake was back. She saw the horror at what he’d done fill his face, and he quickly released her neck. Muttering the curse he tried never to use in her presence, he shifted so that his weight no longer pinned her to the bed. He didn’t move off her, however, and she reached for him, wanting to soothe him before he started flaying himself.
“Did I hurt you?”
“No, I’m fine,” she hastened to assure him. Already she heard the self-contempt in his tone.
“Are you sure?” He remained propped above her while his fingers lightly caressed her throat. Tremors coursed through him, leaving him unsteady.
“I’m sure. You weren’t out of it long.”
She didn’t think he fully believed her. Really, she was okay, though for a moment there she had been worried. His hand moved to her face and he cupped her cheek, running his thumb across her lips. There was a pause as he reached the corner of her mouth; then he bent his head and kissed her. It was gentle, slow, and careful. She sensed contrition in him, and tenderness, and some other emotions she couldn’t label before he broke off and gazed down at her again. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
“I know you are. Please don’t worry over it.” Cai ran her hand up and down his side, trying to reassure him, but she knew it wasn’t working. “It was the nightmare. I know that.”
“Don’t worry about it? I could have killed you.” His voice was tight, intense.
“It was my fault. I shouldn’t have tried to wake you the way I did.” She should have been smarter. The only reason she could come up with to explain such a stupid idea was lust. The thought of climbing on top of him had driven all intelligence from her head.
“Stop trying to make me feel better.”
Instead of continuing to comfort him with words, Cai gathered him closer. Then she froze, almost as shocked as when she’d found his hand at her throat. Jake had an erection. That shook her. Since he always mentally reached for her after his nightmares, she knew how shattered they left him. She was amazed that he was aroused.
“Jake?” She wanted to know why, but he misunderstood.
