There’s sufficient data that shows one of the most important ways to encourage and develop your team is in the area of personal development. When you help your team members understand themselves and how they communicate, help them build positive habits and better relationships, and help them reach more of their personal goals and dreams, you’ll not only encourage them, you’ll create a stronger team member overall.

When employees have stronger, more positive personal relationships and a more meaningful life outside of work, they’ll be better, stronger, more positive team players. This type of training is not hard to obtain. It just takes the desire to do it.

Matthew Kelly captured it well in his book The Dream Manager. He made the point that helping employees reach their dreams in life improves the business. In the book, a Dream Manager is installed at a fictitious company. Since then, Matthew Kelly has created a Dream Manager Certification. I put two of my leaders through it, and they are helping other team members reach their dreams.

Your goal in this step of practicing gift exchange is to recognize each person’s gifts as well as your own and share those gifts with one another. For example, a person who is good with finances can share that gift with others to help them learn how to better manage their finances. Another person who has a gift of connecting with others can share some of the things she does to build rapport.

Whether it’s buying a house, getting their teeth fixed, taking an extended vacation, or changing a habit, people are inspired by the possibilities they see when they go through the process. We also created a Dream Board where team members can post their dreams and goals to remind themselves. This vision board gets the rest of the community involved in encouraging one another as well.
