An Obsessive Pursuit

Upon returning to Maple Lawn, Louise immediately began making new plans. Hardly were her travelling trunks unpacked and her maps, books, and scientific equipment safely stored away when she was off again. She wrote to a colleague: “I quite feel as though I were attached to the tail of a comet, when judging the speed with which this world seems to be taking me from almost one end of it to another!”1 As she journeyed through Europe during the winter of 1933, Louise’s diaries document the places she was visiting, the unique customs of local people, the ever-changing landscape. While somewhat lacking in introspection, her writing reflects an observant woman intensely curious about the world around her. Travelling by bus, horse and sleigh, and even reindeer, this trip exposed her to a different side of the northern Scandinavia she loved:
