Chapter 11

“I had a vasectomy when I was twenty-one,” he says, matter of fact, like it’s the most normal thing in the whole world to have one at such a young age.

“Why would you have a vasectomy at twenty-one?”

He’s silent for a beat, then he meets my eyes. “So I can’t ever have kids.”

I open my mouth and snap it shut as I sink into my seat. My mind begins to spin. I thought our relationship potential was low before this conversation, but now? It’s nonexistent.

I feel like I’ve been kicked in the chest as the car rolls forward. I never expected forever with Tyler, so why does his not wanting kids affect me so much? Because part of me wants to be wrong about this being a fling. When Chloe said he could be my knight in shining armor, I laughed that off, but wouldn’t it have been nice if he was?

When the car stops, we get out and walk up the stone path to a massive log cabin in the woods. His vasectomy and what that says about him and his future plans is all I can focus on. I can’t even appreciate the beautiful home and the perfectly landscaped yard with roses and pruned bushes or the apple trees in the backyard.

“You don’t like it?” he asks, almost disappointed.

“No, it’s beautiful. This is the house you rented?”

He clears his throat and shifts his weight on his feet as we stand side by side.

“Sir, I’ll bring the car around back,” Mitch says. The driver catches Tyler’s attention, and Tyler spins around to wave at him.

“Sure, have a good night, Mitch.”

“I have to work in the morning,” I say as I watch my last chance of getting out of here walk away.

“I’ll make sure you get there.”

I can’t stay. Not now. “What are we doing, Tyler?”

“I’m going to make you dinner in my new house. And then”—he fists the front of my shirt and pulls me close—“I’m going to rip off your clothes and have my way with you.”

I sigh and put my hands over his before removing his hands from my clothing. I take a step back. “That’s not what I meant.” Wait, did he just say his new house? “Did you buy this?” He’s supposed to be leaving in a few weeks. Have his plans changed so much? Is he staying? Not that it makes a lick of difference now.

“It’s an investment. I told you I was working on some things that mean I might have a reason to come here more frequently.” He holds my eyes, as if gauging my reaction.

“Tyler, you’re great.”

“Why do I feel like there’s a but coming.”

I heave a sigh and toss up my hands.

He holds up two fingers. “This is date number two. Don’t get carried away. I was considering this before I met you. You had nothing to do with my buying the house.” He huffs at me, teasing. “Get over yourself.” He follows with a wink.

I bite my lip, my eyes roaming over the large wraparound porch and the tall dark door that must be six feet tall.
