CHAPTER 11

For the next few days, my emotions are up and down. Several times I start to call Dage to break things off between us, but something seems to stop me each time. I swear I must be asking for punishment because I’m not stupid enough to not realize their opinions of me would ever change.

I am halfway through my shift when Alecia comes running down the hallway towards me. She grabs my arm, yanking me towards the front door. “Damn girl, what did you do to that man? Did you finally let him clean the cobwebs out of that thing? Because unless he is in trouble, that’s the only reason a man would spend all this money on something like this.”

“What are you talking about?”

She points up towards the hostess stand and sitting on the counter is a beautiful huge flower arrangement with every color tulip imaginable in it.

“Those are for me?”

“Got your name on them girl.”

By this time almost every server in the restaurant is at the hostess stand looking at this beautiful arrangement. I pick the card off and open it. “Brutus says he is sorry, and I am too, so this is from your two (hopefully) favorite guys.”

I can’t hold back the giggle that leaves my throat and before I can say a word Alecia grabs the card out of my hand.

“Who the hell is Brutus?”

“My bull.”

“Ok, you all got some freaky shit going on out there in the boonies.”

‘Quit it, my bull got into my flower bed the other night and I was upset that he ate all my tulips.”

“Yeah, whatever, girlfriend. That right there is a few hundred-dollar arrangement… You must be doing something right.”

“Alecia, can I ask you something?”

“Ok, why have you got that sad face? This guy apparently likes you. What’s wrong with him that you’re not overly excited about this spectacular gift right here?”

“There is nothing wrong with him, it’s me. Let’s just say that I didn’t live up to his friends’ expectations. I had nice clothes on and for once I even watched my mouth and somehow they knew I wasn’t one of them. How?”

“It’s because you don’t scream snob, sweetie. What do they say, you can take the girl out of the county, but you can’t take the country out of the girl! Baby, we are who we are and that’s just how it’s supposed to be. I think those highfalutin’ assholes have a secret handshake or something that lets you know you’re one of the gang. But in the long run, it wouldn’t have mattered what you wore or how you talked. You are not one of them.”

I know she is right, but… damn. I lean over, smelling the closest tulip, the arrangement is huge and so colorful. I don’t think I have ever received anything this nice. I have to take a deep breath to calm my emotions down as tears form in my eyes.

“Janice, can I leave this up here? I only have a few more hours on my shift and I don’t want the vase to get broken in the back.
