Making the Tight Shot

TECHNIQUE: You can use any normal to mid-telephoto lens for this shot. You want a lens that flattens perspective, and ideally one that’s fast and merciless with depth of field. The narrower the field available for you to play with, the more visual options you’ll have. Shoot these images vertically.

ASSIGNMENT: Go through the garden and find plant specimens that stand out for their color or form or textures (like bark, leaf, or ornament). Find individual subjects that interest you and your camera and shoot them from different angles. Locate a subject that can be approached from varying focal points, such as a tight cluster of blossoms, and vary the subject point from front to midway to back. Then look for plants that could be rendered in black-and-white and shoot them both with and without color.
