Chapter 33

“No matter how powerful the Void may be, they remain temporal—bound to a single timeline, living one moment after the next, always in a forward progression.” Steve smiled and winked. “Unlike me.”

One of the benefits of being a non-temporal entity: he could take Quasar back to any moment in time prior to being swallowed by the black hole. The only question: when to return exactly? It had to be after they rescued the Targusians but before the hungry singularity started gobbling up the queen’s armada. If they weren’t careful, the Harbinger would have her warships to contend with all over again, and who was to say this time they wouldn’t blow the jump ship out of the Martian sky?

“Very well.” Quasar nodded. He had hoped never to travel through time again in his life, but now he had no choice. Not if he wanted to save his people. “What moment do you suggest we return to?”

“Oh, I can’t interfere. I would be excommunicated, as I told you, for all eternity.”

“That ship has sailed, Steve. Own it.” Quasar folded his arms, and the biceps jumped to attention. “You’ve already interfered plenty. So you’re going to take me back to the most opportune moment prior to my people landing in limbo.”

Steve shook his head resolutely. “You won’t like it, Captain.” He paused with a grim, meaningful stare. “You will need to give up the Targusians. You must never go searching for them. That is the only way to keep your people—including the mother of your child and your Carpethrian son—free from danger. The current danger, that is,” he corrected himself. “There’s plenty more looming on the horizon for all of you.”

“There must be a way for us to flee the Red Planet with the Targusians snug in their berths and the queen’s armada otherwise occupied by that ravenous singularity of darkness.”

“I have seen every outcome, Captain. If you face the queen’s armada and try to escape before the appearance of the Void singularity, the Harbinger will be destroyed with all hands aboard.”

“Can’t we just try it? If everything goes wrong, then you’ll give us a do-over. Reset the clock.”

“I’m sorry if I misled you. I am non-temporal. You are not. Dead is dead for a biological entity such as yourself. So we have only one shot at this. You must choose wisely from the moments in your past and plot your return.”

Quasar refrained from chewing his knuckle pensively. “What if you were to go back in time and give me some sort of signal or message…?” He trailed off as the truth dawned on him.

“Yes, Captain.” Steve nodded, his brow wrinkled with sympathy. “That’s the shape of it. We’ve already had this discussion, and I did as you suggested. Hence, the message in the ice that sent you on this mission to begin with. As well as the messages that were meant to make you change your course. The only option we have left would be to undo those warnings.” He paused with a grim nod.
