Chapter Fifteen

A few minutes later, I was riding down the road in Detective Hunter’s pickup truck. Just as I’d expected, the inside was pristine. Everything about the man was nice and neat. Even his hair always looked perfectly balanced, as did his features.

Darkness filled the space outside, adding a little more mystery to this whole outing. I wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.

“So how’s your investigation going?” Hunter slipped a piece of spearmint gum into his mouth before offering me a piece.

I politely declined.

“It’s going,” I said, unsure how much I should reveal about my life and investigations. I had to be a smart girl here and not one given to impulses.

“You haven’t gotten yourself into any more trouble, have you?” He stole a glance at me.

“Nope. I’m proud to report that I’ve had a couple of trouble-free days.” I chose to stay quiet about the fact of being watched. No need to open up that can of caterpillars.

“That’s good news.” He glanced at me in all of his Captain America glory. “Did you find Trina?”

“Not yet. But I found out where she was working, so I’m hoping her coworkers might have some answers.”

“Good luck with your case.”

I couldn’t tell if he was sincere or not, so I decided to move on.

“Are you from around this area?” I asked him, realizing I really didn’t know much about the man other than the fact that he was handsome.

“I’m actually from Georgia.”

“Georgia?” That explained the gentle, rolling Southern accent. I had cousins who lived down there. “How’d you end up here, if you don’t mind me asking?”

His smile slipped a little. “My fiancée went to college up near DC and then she got accepted into a doctorate program afterward. I moved up here to be with her.”

I remembered the article I had seen about the Beltway Killer. Then I remembered seeing a picture of a woman he’d had on his desk. It was the same woman who’d been listed as a victim. But I wasn’t supposed to know that, so I wasn’t even sure how much I could say.

“Your fiancée, huh?” That seemed lackluster but safe enough.

“She died a year ago.” He rubbed his throat as the words left his lips. He didn’t have to tell me for me to know that his heart still ached with loss.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” And I was. I knew all about grief and how horrible it was. I wouldn’t wish it upon my greatest enemy.

“Me too.” His voice took on a raspy tone. “We were supposed to get married last month.”

If Sergio and I had still been together, that’s when we’d talked about also—provided we didn’t elope. Instead, he’d ghosted me, as Michael had explained. “That’s awful. How long were the two of you together?”

“Five years.”

“Five years? That’s a long time.” Sergio and I had only dated six months. I suddenly felt like I had no right to be heartbroken.

“She was finishing her doctorate in psychology.”

“What was her name?” I’d seen it in a news article I read, but I wanted to let him talk about her.
