Bastian
The soft scents of lavender and lemon teased my nose as I drifted into wakefulness. Feeling the warmth of her pressed against my side, I kept my eyes closed and enjoyed this odd, rare gift Iâd somehow managed to find.
It was still dark, and I had no idea what time it was, but my internal clock was off with all the travel Iâd done over the past week. Turning my head, I searched the room and found the digital read-out on a clock somewhere across the unfamiliar room.
Not even six in New York. But back in Liechtenstein, I would have been hours into my day, nearing lunch, likely with several of my fatherâs trusted advisers as they guided and coaxed me through the process of selecting my own advisers.
Even thinking about it was enough to make my mellow mood get decidedly less mellow, so I shoved the thoughts aside. I had a few precious days that I was taking for myself, and Iâd enjoy every second of them. Once this time with Regan was over, Iâd focus on all the responsibilities of being a proper prince, but for now, I wasnât going to rob myself of what little time I had by brooding.
However, aware that I likely wasnât the only one awakeâand that Isaak enjoyed his broodsâI slid from the bed and out of the room. It took just a few seconds to locate my phone, and I sent him a quick text. He answered within seconds.
Awake already, Your Serene Highness?
I scowled and deleted the message.
Iâm Bastian right now, Isaak. That is all. Just Bastian.
His response popped up.
As you wish, sir.
Well, sir was better than Your Serene Highness.
Deciding not to push it, I tapped out another message.
Iâm being a very good boy and checking in. Everything is quiet, and I havenât been kidnapped or stolen away to be held for ransom.
The little dots popped up, indicating that Isaak was answering.
How wonderful. Sir.
I chuckled, because I could actually hear the pithiness in his words although heâd texted rather than spoken to me directly.
Iâll advise you of my plans once I know what they are. Get some more rest if you can. Iâm going to.
I started to put the phone down, then stopped and went back, deleting the messages from him, then making messages from several advisers, my parents, and Franziska private so that Iâd have to use my password to access each of them.
My phone was secured and protected by both my fingerprint and password, and I couldnât see Regan snooping, but I wasnât going to take any chance of her reading some text from my mother. I could just see one of the Hereditary Princessâs social secretaries forwarding me information on the upcoming engagement and me opening it at just the wrong moment.
Now there was an extra layer of protection.
Feeling better, I went back to bed and lay down next to Regan. Sleep didnât come easily, but after a while, I drifted off, surrounded by her warmth and scent.
