The impasse dissolved as Barahal assumed control of marathon sponsorship and he and Cross, in the wake of the Benson faction’s walkout, carried through with a gradual culling of the HMA board. In 1986, just prior to Barahal becoming HMA president, Asatsu delivered a proposal for JAL to become the Honolulu Marathon title sponsor to Jeanette Chun, who then took the offer to Barahal. Kitamura had assured Barahal that the Japanese market was primed for a mass embrace of the Honolulu Marathon, a race the unique characteristics of which—no qualification, no field cap, no time limit—made it an ideal match for Japanese recreational runners shut out of the major competitions in their home country. By that point, however, the response was hardly in doubt. “Jim wasn’t dumb,” said Ron Chun. “He wasn’t a bigot.”6
