The duke and duchess entertained King Charles and at the climax of the celebration, a pie was placed before the queen. Jeffrey burst through the crust, dressed in a tiny suit of armour to the surprise and delight of all.

The queen had a passion for collecting rarities and simply had to add Jeffrey to her collection. He was ‘owned’.

His new housemates included a Welsh giant, William Evans, and two dwarves. In circus slang he was a midget; in medical terms he was a pituitary dwarf. Was he humiliated by being part of the queen’s freak show? Or was he philosophical?

My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your disability doesn’t prevent you doing well, and don’t regret the things it interferes with. Don’t be disabled in spirit as well as physically.

Stephen Hawking (1942 – 2018), English physicist
