CHAPTER 24

“Was that the guy with the busted leg we captured back when I was still a Stormbringer?” Tim asked as he sat on the bumper of a dormant transport. He had been watching the monitor that let them see the tunnel, but there was nothing to see. The cult members who mined the tunnel had gone back to their caves and the afternoon storms had picked up to the point where even if someone decided to look for them in the tunnel, they couldn’t get there without risking life and limb.

“Yeah,” Doreen told him.

“And he’s going to rescue us?”

“I think so.”

“I guess that’s better than nothing, but I’d feel better if it was McReady or even that punk-ass soldier boy and his girlfriend.”

“Beggars can’t be choosers,” Doreen said as she put her hand to her forehead and sat down on the ground.

“You alright?”

“Yeah, well no, maybe. I’m really dizzy all of a sudden. Feel my head, I think I’m running a fever. ”

Tim put the back of his hand on her forehead.

“You’re burning up.”

“The damn Patronis is going to end up killing me after all.”

“You don’t know that. McReady made enough of the antidote to cure us all.”

“It won’t do us any good if they get blown up.”

Tim held up the radio. “When they get close enough, I’ll let them now.”

“They should have already got here.”

“Yeah, welln they could just be running behind.”

“We should lock her in one of these machines,” Annalise said. “It’d be better to tie her up but as you noticed, they already took anything remotely useful out of here.”

Tim looked at her.

“People infected by the Patronis like to take someone with them when they die. I’ve seen it.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“I’m fine with it,” Doreen said. “Except they lock from the inside. I’ll be able to get out.”

“Not once it starts. It makes people crazy and strong, but it also makes them dumb.”

“Dumb enough not to open a door?”

“I don’t know if it makes them that dumb, I haven’t seen it but maybe two times. Usually, if it gets to that point with the Patronis, he doesn’t let them live long enough to show symptoms. Fighting back is frowned upon around here.”

“What did they do to the ones who did live?”

“Tied them on the mesa and let them be tested.”

“Tested?”

“If they survive the storm, God has chosen to forgive them.”

“I’m guessing God didn’t forgive very many of them.”

“By my count none.”

“Probably be better if we locked ourselves in,” Tim said.

“Except then we’d be trapped. They’re going to come back this way eventually. Once that storm stops we need to be somewhere else.”

Tim looked at Doreen’s feet. He noticed her boots were old army issue, meaning they had laces.

“Give me your shoes,” Tim said to her.

“Do you think that will stop me If I go full Patronis on you guys? Being barefoot?”

“No, and I was going to let you put them back on anyway.”

Doreen shrugged and handed over her boots.

Tim pulled the laces on her right boot free and then said, “Give me your hands.
