Pellus emerged from a kinetic rift about a mile from Barakielâs home. He didnât want to chance using a rift within the compound when an anxious human might be peering out the window. Having to use another rift was annoying. As he prepared to leave, Jeduthan had teased him about the gray hair and slightly desiccated skin he adopted, as well as his pinstriped suit. Usually, he did not change his appearance before leaving the Covalent Realm. Having to do so was annoying. Barakielâs relationship with this woman was annoying, as well as dangerous. Still, he would try to be gracious, considering he had agreed to meet her in a fit of affection for his hard-to-handle warrior.
I owe him that much at least, to pass a pleasant evening with her before I tell him that still, I think it is a mistake.
He reached the front door and rang the bell. Having to do this was annoying. Barakiel showed him in. The woman was standing there, by the kitchen counter. She was wearing a sleeveless, teal-colored dress. Her lustrous black hair cascaded around her porcelain face, which Pellus had to admit was quite beautiful.
âFriedrich Pellus, I would like you to meet Zan OâGara.â
When he shook her hand he looked up to meet her gaze. He noticed how solidly she was built. Her figure was perfectly balanced. She could pass for Covalent. He was surprised to find her so aesthetically pleasing.
âNice to meet you, Friedrich.â
âPlease call me Pellus, Ms. OâGara. No one calls me Friedrich by my own choice.â
âAll right, Pellus. You should call me Zan.â She smiled, her dark blue eyes softening. She blushed slightly.
She is no doubt nervous to meet me. It is appealing.
âWell, shall we toast the occasion before we head to the restaurant?â Barakiel asked. He fetched Zan a glass of a sparkling red liquid, then opened a bottle of champagne and poured two glasses. âHereâs to an evening with my two best friends.â
Although he was almost afraid to look, Pellus adjusted his perception to take a measure of the energy he could already feel coming from the warrior. He saw dazzling power, dancing all around him and running up his limbs like fire up a vine. He had to think that even a human could feel it, such was its strength.
Guardian save me, there is no convincing him of anything now. I can only hope he does not give himself to her completely.
After a few minutes of sipping and small talk, Barakiel pulled Zanâs hand to his mouth and kissed it. âShall we go, my love? The reservation is in half an hour.â As they went outside, they told Pellus they were headed to the same restaurant where they had their first real date.
âRainer was worried I wouldnât like all vegetarian food, but it was delicious,â Zan said.
âI am looking forward to it.â Pellus waved his hand to indicate that Zan should walk before him. As Barakiel watched her move, Pellus saw the hunger in his eyes, but also peace.
