Have you taken leave of your senses?” snarled Jocko. “We should be heading west, back to San Louie, not south to the Caribe Sea. There’s nothing there but alligators and plague and columns of fire.”

“What better place to trade the 10,000 units of anti-biotics we’re still carrying for some exotic leather and dried lizard?” retorted Rhianna, scooping another ladle of stew from the communal pot. “Those were good sellers the last time we were in San Antone.”

“Before the Nuevas Republicas swept over the city walls. Safety of the ship, remember?” Jocko stood up abruptly, nearly flipping the table in the process.

“Asshole,” muttered Patrick, earning an angry glare.

“If I’d known your plans, I would have been asked to be let off in Washtown. There’s plenty of work there for anyone who wants it. Right, Carolyn?”

Carolyn wouldn’t meet Jocko’s eyes. Rhianna had waited until she was sure it was over between them before announcing her latest plans. Carolyn might not like the proposed route but she would support it to spite her former lover. Patrick would back her and Jocko would fall in line once he saw the writing on the wall.

“Right, Carolyn?” Jocko put his hand on the woman’s shoulder but she flinched away.

“Keep your hands to yourself.”

Jocko was the last to know.

Patrick snorted, gaining a second angry look. He reached for another slab of bread to dip in his stew.

Only Ivan, sitting at the far end of the table, seemed unconcerned with the drama playing out in the room.

Jocko glared from one face to the other before storming out of the dining room. If he was looking for his revolver, he was going to be disappointed.

The trick to anything is to stay one step ahead of everyone else. Rhianna was still smiling ten minutes later when a loud thud shook the ship and cockpit alarms started screaming. The gondola lurched to the side, dumping the remaining stew on the floor. Moments later, the Oberon hit the trees with a sickening crunch.
