“I would like to apologize for the missed class, Your Lordship,” Jeco said, entering his teacher’s rooms.

“It’s all right.” Lord Farizel smiled as he rose to greet him. “And I thank you for sending a servant to let me know. What happened? The servant said you couldn’t get off work early that day. I thought I had it all arranged, and the librarian was perfectly fine with it.”

“Oh, he is, he’s always willing to let me go. But I had an accident that day—I got ink spilled all over my desk, so I had to rewrite the whole day’s worth of work.”

“That must have been very frustrating. But I’m glad to hear that was the reason.” Farizel winked. “I thought you wanted nothing to do with me after the way I behaved with the king.”

“You did scare me,” Jeco chuckled, “but not that bad. When you started attacking His Majesty, I just wanted to run and hide. But then I remembered that Your Lordship does not do anything without a good reason, so I figured you had something in mind.”

“That’s right, Tarres. Let me explain.”

Farizel checked the door, making sure it was closed well, then he gestured to the boy to follow him to the opposite corner of the living room, to a small velvet couch.

“Have a seat.”

The lord lowered himself on a chair in front of it and spoke in a low voice.

“When I had carelessly invited you to go for a ride, I thought it would go unnoticed if our fellowship stopped right there. I was wrong. Too many people saw us, and rumors had started spreading all over the palace, rumors that stubbornly wouldn’t subside. I drew more attention to you than I wanted, which is not safe.”

Jeco gazed at him, not quite understanding. Lord Farizel noticed that.

“I see you need a better explanation… Very well, I will call things their proper names. I’ve already told you, if you remember, that because of my special position I cannot afford having friends…” He glanced at the door and continued, his voice almost a whisper. “The king can be unpredictable. Today, he is ready to execute anyone who dares to say a harsh word to me—but tomorrow, in a sudden burst of anger, he can swiftly destroy both myself and those dear to my heart.”

“To be honest, I find it hard to imagine…” Jeco said, puzzled. “I saw His Majesty only once, and know nothing about his character, but he treated you with such sincere friendliness that, really, the thought of him being cruel to you seems impossible.”

“Yet what I said is true. And we should always remember that.” Lord Farizel leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. “So when I had realized that I made a mistake, it was already too late. Everybody was talking about you, as well as us spending time together. Sooner or later, it would have reached the king’s ears. I gave it some thought and figured that the best way to protect you, if not the only way, was to make His Majesty personally interested in you.
