Gewürztraminer (pronounced gah-VERTS-truh-MEEN-er) is a pink-skinned clone of the much older Traminer vine that probably originated in Northern Italy. “Gewürz-” is German for “spicy” or “pungent” and reflects the powerful aromas of Gewürztraminer wines. It is the least subtle of all the well-known vinifera grapes.

Although it grows best in Alsace (France), it plays second fiddle there to the Riesling grape. Its share of vineyard space in Germany has been on the decline, again being out-muscled by the Riesling grape. California and Pacific Northwest versions of this quirky variety tend to lack the complexity of their European counterparts, but can be both enjoyable and affordable.

Suggested Food Pairings

Rich, pungent, spicy flavors with fruit notes of lychee and grapefruit rind make for a difficult food-wine pairing. As such, Gewürztraminer is often suggested with spicy Asian food—an awkward blind date at best. Regional tradition in Alsace matches Gewürztraminer with sausage and ham. Because of its low acidity and bold flavors, Gewürztraminer can be enjoyable without food. Alternatively, a simple, creamy cheese provides a good background for the complex, full personality of this grape.
