1. You get home from work and your significant other says, “Let’s go out to dinner” and then suggests a restaurant you do not enjoy. What do you do or say to convince your partner to go to a different restaurant of your choice? Perhaps you say, “I ate that type of food for lunch.” Or “The last time we ate at that restaurant, we had to wait about forty-five minutes to be served.” Or “Why don’t we go to a place that neither of us has ever been before?”

2. Your significant other replies, “But you chose the restaurant the last time we went out for dinner. It’s my turn to choose!” You may suggest, “If you let me choose the restaurant, I’ll pay” or “The last time I went to that restaurant, I was on Imodium A-D for three days. I am not going there again.”

3. Your significant other remains firm and will not go to another restaurant. She or he touches you gently on the hand and says, “Honey, I was hoping you would go to my restaurant. It would make me so happy.” Now what? Would you say, “Okay, let’s go” or “Fine, if we can’t agree, I’ll take you to your restaurant and drop you off. Then I’ll go to my restaurant. When I am finished eating, I’ll swing by and pick you up”?
