Clara

She is sitting by his hospital bed, holding his hand, when he comes round. Her face is blotchy and swollen from sobbing.

‘Thank god,’ she whispers, as his eyes flicker open.

‘Clara?’ he says, but his gaze is unfocused.

‘I’m here,’ she says, leaning in closer. ‘I’m here. You’re OK. The doctors have checked you over and you’re fine. You bumped your head on some rocks when you came off the stupid ring thing but the lifeguard got you out of the water quickly and you’ll be fine.’

He smiles. There’s a dark purple bruise covering half of his face.

‘My back hurts,’ he says, frowning.

‘I’m not surprised,’ she says. ‘You’re head to toe in bruises. But you’ll recover. As for me. I’m not sure I ever will. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.’

It’s meant to be a joke, but she realises she is actually crying again.

‘Hey,’ he says, his voice croaky. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘I honestly thought… I thought that was it. That you were gone.’

‘And you weren’t happy about it? I’ve got good life insurance, you know.’

‘Thom,’ she says, warningly. ‘Don’t. I was so scared…’

‘I’m sorry,’ he says again, squeezing her hand. ‘I promise never to do water sports again.’

She nods, wiping her eyes.

‘I should think not.’

He shifts slightly in the bed, sitting up a little.

‘Oh well,’ he says, ‘it’s a good story to tell the grandchildren, I guess.’
