Preparation

“What did Dylan’s ranking earlier say?” Miranda asks Terry. He reads her the sheet of paper: Emily, Winna, Laura, Sam, Anna Mae. Her two girls are holding the top spots, and all her plans are starting to reap their rewards. Sam’s the only strong contender Wyatt has left, but his face remains cool. They’re in the production room, surrounded by large screens rolling through the footage of the week. It’s 3 a.m. The fifteen women and dozens of staff fly to Iceland the next night. Her teeth feel mossy after eating twelve mini 3 Musketeers bars from the bowl that craft services sets aside for her.

“Jazmin dropped off?” Andrea clarifies.

“Yes,” Terry says. “She hasn’t been on there since last Tuesday, so that’s been”—he pauses to count it out, days blurred in everyone’s minds during the frantic preparation to begin their travels—“five days.”

The last season with a male lead, he eliminated all the Black women by the fifth episode, and people on Twitter took notice. The last lead story producer got fired over it to appease the masses. They replaced the white man host with a white woman host, one who’s even approaching middle age. Frank had made a comment that Miranda should like that, seeing a woman like herself on-screen and in power. Miranda scheduled a new six-week Botox filler appointment right after that meeting. At parties in the off-season, Miranda talks about all the initiatives the show is doing for diversity. They hired a full-time DEI consultant to run affinity groups for the staff. Wyatt, Filipino, replaced the old producer. They post their internship opportunities on HBCU job boards. Her friends tell her how admirable it is that the show is trying to represent real people’s lives. They’ll have to get Jazmin back up on his list. Winna, who’s Korean, was an early bet for the winner, or maybe even the next lead, and Sam, she’s half Mexican. People will like that.

“Who does he want on the solo date this week?” Wyatt asks.

“Laura, but we can’t give him that yet. See if he’ll go with Vivian. Tell him that they can ski down a glacier. We’ve got to keep him separate from Emily for next week. Did you hear what he said about the phone numbers?” Terry says.

Miranda smiles, happy that someone else brought up how her girl is in the lead. Emily keeps getting better and better. She knows, though, that there’s a fine balance when they create the arc of the season. For the most part, the relationships need to inch along at the same pace. Terry works with Dylan on picking the dark horse, someone lurking on the side of the pack who is ready to become a front-runner. Miranda looks at the stream from the camera in the corner of the kitchen. She always misses it once they start to travel. She likes to watch the women cook together, the way they hold out wooden spoons for each other to taste pasta sauces. Earlier that week, as she drafted the date card for the solo date, Emily came into the kitchen.
