Chapter 17
I woke Saturday to a quiet house. It was the one day a week my parents took the morning for themselves. They never left me home alone, just holed up together in their room. Mom called them their dates since they refused to go anywhere without me. I smiled to myself thinking that could change now.
I stretched on my way to the kitchen to work out some of the kinks from last night’s training. I’d spent most of the time sparring with Jenna and wasn’t nearly as sore from that as I was the weightlifting.
Coffee was already brewed so I grabbed a cup and took it with me to curl up in my favorite chair. Homework was done, and I was free until Jenna and Kai picked me up at ten. We’d decided during gym the day before to make the drive over to Breckinridge to do some boarding and have some girl time. Though I hadn’t exactly cleared it with the parents yet, I was confident I could talk them into it. That left me an hour to read, and I let out a happy sigh.
I pulled my latest paperback out of the drawer of the side table. I traced my fingers over the slightly raised lettering of the title then brought the book up to my face and inhaled. I loved the smell of books. Once Mom caught me inhaling the scent of the pages and looked at me like I was crazy. Dad grinned. He understood my need to smell them, which made sense since my love for books came from him.
A chapter in and I had to put it down. Reading wasn’t distracting me like it normally did. I couldn’t get lost in its imaginary world, because my own world was so fantastical. I put the book away, using a nifty foldable, magnetic marks that saved both page and line location, to mark my spot. Pulling out pen and paper I began to free draw. Whatever came into my head I sketched. Liam’s mark was drawn first followed by lines of the prophecy in looping letters. I read them over again while my pen repeatedly traced the words. We needed the key and to get it we had to find the Keeper. Unfortunately, there was no discernible clue that would lead us to either. Frustrated, I tossed both items onto the couch.
“Stupid, idiotic verse. Why can’t it be step by step instructions?” A chuckle behind me had me leaping up and moving into a fighting position. “Damn it, Chase, what are you doing here? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“Sorry, love, I didn’t want to wake your parents by knocking. I didn’t expect to find anyone in the living room, much less your charming self.”
My pressed my lips together, irritated. “Seriously, Chase.”
“Now, now, love. No need to get snippy. I came to get you up for training of course.”
My jaw dropped open at this announcement and I began shaking my head. “No. No way, Chase.
