Wendel’s treatment appears to be sound indeed. Willis is in substantial agreement, yet arrives at similar conclusions from a slightly different path. “He [Calvin] views the Incarnation,” states Willis, “as a reassertion of Christ’s empire over the part of creation which had rebelled.” How was this so? One may ask. Willis goes on to explain. He posits, that according to Calvin,

In the Incarnation there was an ordering of the lesser by the greater, of the weak by the powerful, so that the Eternal Son’s life and power during the period of the Incarnation were never exhausted by his fleshly Person or by his fleshly accomplishments. Others seek to avoid diminishing Christ’s eternal reality during the period of the Incarnation by saying that eternal properties were shared by the humanity, but Calvin feels such a route would bypass the real humanity of Christ. The eternal properties were exercised by Christ during the Incarnation not by the humanity of the One Person but by the Divinity of the One Person. In the Incarnation, the Son of God left heaven only in such a way that he continued to exercise his dominion over creation; the Incarnation was the extension of his dominion, not the momentary abdication of it.74
