OTHER BRIDGES

Less photogenic bridges also were built during the 1990s. Water Street’s bridge over the Rocky River was replaced in 1990. A state agency had declared the old bridge among the twenty worst bridges in a five-county region. But the new bridge’s concrete sides disappointed many people because motorists could no longer view the waterfalls on the river.

In November 1994, a new $3.4 million bridge to carry Bagley Road over the Rocky River opened after more than a decade of planning and ten months of construction. It was part of a larger project to expand Bagley Road from two lanes to four lanes from the railroad tracks in Berea to Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls.

At the southern end of Olmsted Falls, on Sprague Road, another two-lane bridge over the Rocky River was replaced with a four-lane bridge. After eight months of construction, the new bridge opened in November 1998 at a cost of about $2 million.

In the northern part of the township, the county completely rebuilt John Road early in the 1990s to expand its width from twenty to twenty-eight feet with concrete pavement, curbs, storm drains and sidewalks. The cost was more than $2 million.
