When I arrive at K&B Financial, a receptionist leads me past a series of glass-paned doors until she pauses in front of a small conference room. I glance farther down the hall to where it branches off into a shorter hall that ends at Emil and Tobiasâs offices. I thought Iâd go there first, to get the rundown on the client before the meeting.
The receptionist gives me a brittle smile and gestures to the conference room. âIf youâll wait here? Mr. König and Mr. Braxton will be with you shortly.â
Nodding, I walk into the room and grip the back of one padded chair, unsure where I should sit.
She hovers in the doorway. âWould you like anything to drink while you wait? Bottled water? Coffee?â
I glance back at her. âWater would be nice.â
Her eyes skim over me, her lips tightening before she grasps the handle and closes the door.
I peer down at my outfit and donât see a problem with it. I wore black slacks to work and brought a nice blue blouse to change into before I left the bakery. My steel-blue purse even coordinates. Granted, my neon-blue clogs stand out against the neutral gray carpet, but Iâll be sitting behind a table, so my footwear shouldnât be an issue.
Maybe itâs the quality of the material? I finger the stiff slacks. They repel liquid nicely, but maybe I should have purchased a nicer pair? Something more fitted? No one said anything about dressing nicely for the meeting.
Nothing I can do about it now, though, so I take in the meeting room.
The wooden, rectangle table sits six people, with padded seats made to provide comfort during long meetings. The same low-pile carpet from the hall extends into the room in natural gray a shade lighter than the wainscoting that rises halfway up the wall. Above, the white walls offer a canvas for a series of nature pictures of the ocean and forest. The only window in the room faces into the hall, with vertical blinds next to it, ready to be pulled for privacy.
Do the blinds get pulled once everyoneâs here? Or only on special occasions? What would warrant a special occasion at a bank? Billion-dollar deals? As a bank used by demons, do they do billion-dollar deals? My deal was only a few thousand. Was that normal or laughable? Did they only agree to see me because they wanted me for other reasons?
I reach up and check my chignon, where I carefully tucked my blue tips away so only the white shows. Not a lot of demons have white hair, but there are a few. And with Emil as the bank president, I might be mistaken as another ice demon.
While they never said I needed to hide that Iâm a succubus, I figure it will be easier to get a read on the person if they donât know to be wary and hide their thoughts in advance. Part of my limited success with Tally comes with her purposefully leaving her mind open.
