The Sonnenfeld Center for the Arts opened its doors today, welcoming students from throughout the area. The center offers art classes for both children and adults and functions as an all-in-one hub where artists can create, display, and sell their work.

Michael Sonnenfeld, local real estate developer, business owner, and philanthropist, oversaw the project from start to finish.

“There’s a growing market for this type of development,” Sonnenfeld said in an interview earlier this year. “But it was also about giving back to the community that raised me. When we invest in arts education, Oregonians thrive.”

The project experienced a few roadblocks in its early stages. The riverfront land had been unofficially used as a park by locals, despite the lot changing hands many times over the past decade. This led to a zoning dispute that culminated in a contentious protest last September.

“In the end, the people of this community came together to support the arts,” Sonnenfeld said. “Our children deserve the best. And that’s what I intend to give them.”

Local artist twenty-year-old Alyssa Linden has been anticipating the grand opening for weeks: “I can’t believe my work is in a real-life gallery. It’s surreal. I’m going to be teaching classes there too. I only wish this place had been around when I was a kid.”

There’s no way.

I read the article for a second time. Then a third.

Surely there’s another wealthy man named Sonnenfeld somewhere in this city. Just because Leah is the first Sonnenfeld I’ve ever met doesn’t mean it’s not a common name. As Leah pointed out, it’s not like I socialize much.

I click on another article. City Greenlights New Luxury Condominiums from Sonnenfeld Properties. It’s about the hideous high-rise downtown.

Then another. Potential Senate Bid from Real Estate Mogul Michael Sonnenfeld? Because more millionaires in government is just what this country needs.

My hands are shaking as I click on the next one. Johnson Memorial Renovates NICU After Generous Donation. I had been holding on to a tiny sliver of hope, but this article confirms what my brain already knew. Michael Sonnenfeld donated a large sum of money to this very hospital after his son—Leah’s little brother—was born prematurely and spent three months in the NICU.

I lean closer to the screen, squinting at the photo underneath the article. The caption reads: Michael Sonnenfeld; his wife, Elise; and their oldest daughter, Leah, at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I look back to the grainy image, there’s no doubt about it. My girlfriend is standing next to her parents, holding a ridiculously large pair of scissors.

Shit. Not my girlfriend. Nobody said anything about Leah being my girlfriend. Well, other than my father, sister, and all of my friends.

But if a relationship had been possible fifteen minutes ago, it’s not now. There’s no way I can date the daughter of the millionaire who destroyed Halmoni’s favorite park.

My grandmother devoted the last two years of her life to lobbying against this arts center. She and her friends fought
