Chapter 6
Althea lowered her gun. She didnât raise her voice. The words she chose, quiet and precise, made her feelings known with more clarity than a shout could have.
When sheâd finished, Colt could only shake his head in admiration. âI donât believe Iâve ever been cussed out with more style. Now, Iâd be obliged if youâd holster that gun. Not that I figure youâd use it and risk getting blood all over your floor.â
âIt might be worth it.â She slapped her gun back in place, but her eyes never left his. âYou have the right to remain silent⦠.â she began.
Wisely, Colt stifled a chuckle. He held up a hand. âWhatâre you doing?â
âIâm reading you your rights before I haul your butt in for nighttime breaking and entering.â
He didnât doubt sheâd do it. Sheâd have him booked, fingerprinted and photographed without breaking stride. âIâll waive them, providing you listen to an explanation.â
âIt better be good.â Shrugging out of her blazer, she tossed it over the back of the chair. âHow did you get in here?â
âI, ah ⦠Through the door?â
Her eyes narrowed. âYou have the right to an attorney.â
Obviously humor wasnât going to do the trick. âOkay, Iâm busted.â He tossed up both hands in a gesture of surrender. âI picked the lock. Itâs a damn good one, too. Or maybe Iâm getting rusty.â
âYou picked the lock.â She nodded, as if it were no more than sheâd expected. âYou carry a concealed weaponâan ASP nine-millimeter â¦â
âGood eye, Lieutenant.â
âAnd a knife that likely exceeds the legal limit,â she continued. âNow it appears you also carry lockpicks.â
âThey come in handy.â And it was something he preferred not to dwell on when she was in this sort of mood. âNow, I figured you had a rough day, and you deserved coming home to a hot meal and some cold wine. I also figured youâd be a little testy coming in and finding me here. But I have to believe youâll come around after youâve had a taste of my linguine.â
Maybe, she thought, maybe if she closed her eyes for a minute, it would all go away. But when she tried it, he was still there, grinning at her. âYour linguine?â
âLinguine marinara. Iâd claim it was my sainted motherâs recipe, but she never boiled an egg in her life. How about that wine?â
âSure. Why the hell not?â
âThatâs the way.â He stepped back into the kitchen. Deciding she could always kill him later, Althea followed. The aromas drifting through the air were heaven. âYou like white,â he said as he poured two glasses, using her best crystal. âThis is a nice, full-bodied Italian that wonât embarrass my sauce. Bold, but classy. See if it suits you.â
She accepted the glass, allowed him to clink his against hers, then sipped. The wine tasted like liquid heaven. âWho the hell are you, Nightshade?â
âWhy, Iâm the answer to your prayers. Why donât we go in and sit down? You know you want to take your shoes off.â
She did, but she obstinately kept them on as she walked back and lowered herself onto the couch.
