Chapter 17

Madison

I’m not sure how I got conned into going to dinner at Ivan’s parents’ house, but Sara is a sneaky little thing. A part of me wonders if she knows Ivan and I kissed through the clinic security camera or something. Her timing was too coincidental.

A kiss that felt like I was soaring but has since made me feel uncertain and afraid. I know the consequences of falling in love with someone I work with, and they’re not in my favor. Ivan doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would hurt a fly. The again, Ben seemed like the man of my dreams.

But I lost my job and my home by escaping the mule-butt jerk.

And to follow in Uncle James’s footsteps.

The timing to come work at Healing Hands was perfect, even if it was due to heartbreak. My uncle always tells me things happen in a flow we may not understand but are necessary for our soul.

I take a deep breath and shove thoughts of Ben out of my mind before Ivan arrives. I’m already nervous about this dinner. I do not need to my ex-boyfriend’s ghost haunting me as well.

My phone rings, and I race to answer it in case it’s Ivan. I sigh when my mom’s name flashes on the screen and pick up the phone.

“Hey, Mom.” I pace the living room.

“Hi, sweetie, how are you? I haven’t heard from you today.”

Yeah, because I was busy kissing my co-worker and then getting invited to his family’s house for dinner.

“It’s been a busy day. We rescued a llama.”

“A llama? Well, it seems that James’s clinic is a lot more entertaining than your old one.” She laughs.

“Yup.” I sit on the couch to avoid getting sweaty from pacing by the time Ivan gets here. “How are you and Daddy?”

“We’re good. We miss you, though.”

“Maybe you can come visit once Uncle James is back from his trip.”

“I’d love that.”

“Great. We can plan it,” I say absentmindedly and check the time on my phone. Ivan should’ve been here already.

“Actually, I need to go, Mom. I’ll call you tomorrow.” I hop to my feet.

“Is everything okay? You sound agitated.”

“It’s all great.” I look at Boots. “It’s that I adopted a kitty. I think I told you, and I need to feed him and take care of a few things.” A white lie never hurt anyone.

“What’d you name him? Send me a picture.”

“Boots, and I will.” I hurry her up with my hand even though she can’t see me.

“So cute.”

“He is. I’ll make sure to send you that photo. We’ll talk tomorrow. Bye.” I hang up, feeling like I might throw up a little.

How did Ivan and I go from one kiss to having dinner with the parents?

I shake my hands and hop around in place to release this built-up energy. Then, I smooth down my pleated skirt and take a slow breath.

It’s just dinner with a nice family so I won’t have to eat alone. It’s all about the friendly neighbors in a small town.
