Chapter 17
Madison
Iâm not sure how I got conned into going to dinner at Ivanâs parentsâ house, but Sara is a sneaky little thing. A part of me wonders if she knows Ivan and I kissed through the clinic security camera or something. Her timing was too coincidental.
A kiss that felt like I was soaring but has since made me feel uncertain and afraid. I know the consequences of falling in love with someone I work with, and theyâre not in my favor. Ivan doesnât seem like the type of guy who would hurt a fly. The again, Ben seemed like the man of my dreams.
But I lost my job and my home by escaping the mule-butt jerk.
And to follow in Uncle Jamesâs footsteps.
The timing to come work at Healing Hands was perfect, even if it was due to heartbreak. My uncle always tells me things happen in a flow we may not understand but are necessary for our soul.
I take a deep breath and shove thoughts of Ben out of my mind before Ivan arrives. Iâm already nervous about this dinner. I do not need to my ex-boyfriendâs ghost haunting me as well.
My phone rings, and I race to answer it in case itâs Ivan. I sigh when my momâs name flashes on the screen and pick up the phone.
âHey, Mom.â I pace the living room.
âHi, sweetie, how are you? I havenât heard from you today.â
Yeah, because I was busy kissing my co-worker and then getting invited to his familyâs house for dinner.
âItâs been a busy day. We rescued a llama.â
âA llama? Well, it seems that Jamesâs clinic is a lot more entertaining than your old one.â She laughs.
âYup.â I sit on the couch to avoid getting sweaty from pacing by the time Ivan gets here. âHow are you and Daddy?â
âWeâre good. We miss you, though.â
âMaybe you can come visit once Uncle James is back from his trip.â
âIâd love that.â
âGreat. We can plan it,â I say absentmindedly and check the time on my phone. Ivan shouldâve been here already.
âActually, I need to go, Mom. Iâll call you tomorrow.â I hop to my feet.
âIs everything okay? You sound agitated.â
âItâs all great.â I look at Boots. âItâs that I adopted a kitty. I think I told you, and I need to feed him and take care of a few things.â A white lie never hurt anyone.
âWhatâd you name him? Send me a picture.â
âBoots, and I will.â I hurry her up with my hand even though she canât see me.
âSo cute.â
âHe is. Iâll make sure to send you that photo. Weâll talk tomorrow. Bye.â I hang up, feeling like I might throw up a little.
How did Ivan and I go from one kiss to having dinner with the parents?
I shake my hands and hop around in place to release this built-up energy. Then, I smooth down my pleated skirt and take a slow breath.
Itâs just dinner with a nice family so I wonât have to eat alone. Itâs all about the friendly neighbors in a small town.
